New Rehabilitation and education programme for people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases

January was a very exciting month for me and for some of the people of Sonning Common, near Henley on Thames, South Oxfordshire, as The Sonning Common Surgery under the auspices of Dr Ed Diggins and myself piloted a rehabilitation programme for people suffering from chronic chest diseases, such as Chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma.

Patient responses

Patients reported that they had found the course very useful. The most important thing was that they had learned how to breath! They also found they had more energy, felt more confident to partake in exercise as they were no longer afraid of becoming breathless. They felt much happier in themselves. All looked forward to participating in new activities or continuing old ones more successfully.

I have recently attended a four day Sarah Key ‘Problem Backs Master Class’ at Highgrove, the home of Prince Charles (who is patron of BackCare, the Charity for Healthier Backs). The Masterclass was developed and run by Sarah Key, a gifted and charismatic Australian, who is the British Royal Family’s personal physiotherapist. With the Prince of Wales’ backing and support, proceeds from the course are being put into a fund to support research in to Sarah Key’s simple, but effective method.

Sarah challenges all of the ‘Holy cows’ of back pain management such as “do not bend”, “keep you back straight to lift” and controversially uses the heel and ball of the foot to gently but powerfully tease stuck spinal joints into mobility.

I am looking forward to using Sarah Key’s Problem Backs method and with other colleagues in Reading and Berkshire, to monitor the results.
